Amazon.com The cover art for HBO's comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Fifth Season implies that the series' star Larry David is Everyman. Larry is not Everyman; in fact, he is far from it. Somewhat of an amalgam of the Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer characters he co-created for Seinfeld, yet so uniquely Larry, his socially inept behavior is the basis for and the best part of the show. This fifth season holds no exceptions to the world oblivious to social graces that is Larry David's. Larry tackles some tough issues, his main conundrum being the fact that his close friend Richard Lewis (comedian Richard Lewis playing himself) needs a new kidney. Season 5 slants towards Larry's soul searching: will he take the donor test? Is he a match? What will he do if he is a match? We see how far Larry will go to help his friend in need: staging car accidents, fake marriages, and more. We think we see some depth to Larry when he suspects he may be adopted and cheerfully embarks on a search to find his "real" parents, but are reminded how things really are, when he throws morality out the window, striking up a friendship with the known sexual predator in the neighborhood in order to improve his golf game. Of course there is the very Seinfeld feel to this show in general, the tone, the self-involved lead character--and in the first few episodes there are actual storylines and even spoken lines taken almost verbatim from Seinfeld episodes, so much so that an avid Seinfeld fan may start to lose patience. Stick with it, though, because the Seinfeld-ian similarities wind down through the second half of the season and the Curb your Enthusiasm hilarity revs up. --Rachel Moss

"I'm a doctor?!" August 14, 2010 The Northern Light (Europa, Close to Ultima Thule) Well, who would think that Larry David is by me considered one of the funniest guys on the planet, knowing my "politics"?! Indeed he is, though! In an age where humour is mostly on the level of "Friends", it is hard to find any humour show that is worth to waste some time with. This show, though, can make me laugh so hard my fiancée sometimes looks at me strangely. It has its very dull moments too, not to mention that the show is (obviously) as Jewish as a show can get. Everything is there, the extreme "liberal/leftist" political opinions, the references to Jewish secular culture and mannerisms constantly, the anti-gentile tone and of course, the trophy "shiksa" wife of Mister David himself. That being said, (although it is of course not 100 % real, being a show and all) it offers very fascinating insights into a culture that is closed for us slow-witted gentiles, at the same time that it is a very self-ironic show. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the show is really "anti-gentile" or something like that, it is more "anti-Jewish" if anything, considering how it makes fun of them. The show kicks both "Left" and "Right", and like South Park is really a show for every "side".
The "pathetic" figure of Richard Lewis, and his interplay with Larry David, not to mention the no-spine manager of theirs; Jeff, really makes this one of the funniest and most surreal shows out there. I laugh onto the floor in every scene including either of these two characters, and especially while they fight Mister David, and of course if even Ted Danson is included, you'll be all set for the night. Watch the episodes "The Larry David Sandwich", "The Christ Nail", "Kamikaze Bingo", "Lewis Needs A Kidney", "The Seder", "The Ski Lift" and of course the possible major discovery and some major stereotypical insights into Jewish view of Gentile life in "The End", and if you don't die with laughter, this show is not for you at all. Beware, that there is nothing holy in the world of Larry David, but he's quite open about it, so not really the usual "hidden agendas" here. Once again Larry David takes the show to new heights, with both the whole Richard Lewis-situation (the hallway-scene cracks me up every time) and the entire Passover-situation, which is just hilarious. Five stars, no doubt.
Lives Up to the Very High Standard January 30, 2010 J. Brodie (East coast, USA) Larry David never ceases to amaze. The Ski Lift episode, with Larry throwing off mumbles intended to sound like Hebrew, is totally hilarious. He rules.
Good Change of Pace January 18, 2010 Anita Bath I was worried that this show was getting too predictable. After all it seems to cycle through Larry getting in trouble for some awkward reason, someone getting pissed at him and then he's forced to apologize in his own way. I thought this season picked up when Richard has to get a kidney transplant. You already know that Larry won't want to give it to him but it's fun to see how it plays out.If you're ready for more of the good comedy we saw in season 1 and 2, pick up season 5.
Oh and the cameo of Dustin Hoffman in the finale totally surprised me. I kept saying "Is that Dustin Hoffman?. I think it is" and it was.
Who? November 10, 2009 Wallace Stegner (Knoxville, TN USA) Who is Larry Davis? If you don't like Seinfeld, you probably won't like this either. Funniest show on the air, bar none!!
Curb is pure GENIUS!!! August 30, 2009 A. Monique Laguerre (Providence, RI) Ever since my bestfriend turned me onto Curb Your Enthusiasm I've been hooked! It is the most intelligent humour on television without being pretentious or predictable! So far the sixth season is my favorite but all of his shows are gems! Larry David is one of the funniest people I've seen in my lifetime and I'm picky. Pick one of the seasons and watch it! I assure you, you won't be disappointed.
