| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential video Bull Durham is about minor league baseball. It's also about romance, sex, poetry, metaphysics, and talent--though not necessarily in that order. Susan Sarandon plays a loopy lady who just loves America's national pastime--and the men who play it. At the opening of every season, she attaches herself to a promising rookie and guides him through the season. Unfortunately, the player she bestows her favors upon does not really deserve it. She knows it, and veteran Kevin Costner knows it. Her choice, a dim bulb played for laughs by Tim Robbins, is the only one who doesn't know it. The film, directed by its writer, Ron Shelton, a former minor league player, is rich in subtle detail. There are Edith Piaf records playing in the background, fast-talking managers, and minor characters as developed as the leads. Sarandon's retro-'50s outfits make you think she's just another bimbo, not an English teacher very much in control of her life. And Costner's clear-eyed, slightly vitriolic performance is devastatingly sexy and keenly witty. The love scenes, though tasteful, are almost as humorous as they are hot. Sarandon's character likes to tie her players up and expand their horizons by reading Walt Whitman to them, "'cause a guy will listen to anything if he thinks it's foreplay." How can you not love a movie with such a wicked sense of humor? --Rochelle O'Gorman

All in all, this is a great "Bull Durham" Blu-Ray... August 9, 2010 APC Reviews (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As someone who has loved "Bull Durham" for years, and owned it in everything from VHS onwards, I have to say that the new Blu-Ray is a definite upgrade to picture quality from all previous versions. Granted, the antiquated MPEG-2 codec used for the disc, combined with 1080p resolution from a HD transfer, gives it that "best DVD you have ever seen" quality that makes it look slightly anemic compared to more up to date transfers using AVC and so forth.
But all you have to do is put the included DVD in and A/B the two discs and the differences stand right out. The BD is the clear winner. The special features and commentary, what that there is, is included on the DVD version of the film. As to why we are getting several of these BD/DVD combos with the special features on the DVD instead of the BD, I would assume that it is either a rights situation, or the studio doesn't want to do anything other than take the masters they have on the shelf off the shelf and do no more. This is MGM, remember, a studio that is so cash poor and next to bankruptcy that it recently canceled pre-production on the latest Bond film, one the studio's bread and butter franchises. All in all, this is a great "Bull Durham" Blu-Ray.
Great Baseball Movie July 26, 2010 J. Babbitt (Chetek WI USA) I don't think Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have ever been better (and yes, I have seen the Shawshank Redemption). The chemistry between the thee is perfect. Even if you are not a huge baseball fan, I think you'll very much enjoy this movie.
I admit it, I just don't get this film July 3, 2010 Harry M. Shin (Livermore, CA USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm going to assume that everyone else knows what they're talking about and that this is a great classic film. Since it is a classic film, I recently watched it and basically it was a big huge yawn. Perhaps I should have watched it when it came out. Perhaps watching it now (2010) makes it look so dated and... 80s. The acting... I mean Tim Robbins is so goofy and unrealistic; it seems more like some highschool production than some highly acclaimed classic movie. My 1 cent worth.
Blu-Ray: Substellar June 6, 2010 The Tao of Netflix (Washington, DC) Obviously this movie is one of the all time bests. However, the Blu Ray leaves a lot to be desired. The picture is very grainy, and very minor enhancements (only really color) over the original DVD. As much as I love this movie, I cannot advocate buying the Blu Ray if you already own the SD DVD.
